Dunwoody Nature Center Opens the Wildcat Creek Learning Lab

If you’ve spent any time at the Dunwoody Nature Center, you already know how special that place is. Now it just got a whole lot better.

The Nature Center will open the Wildcat Creek Learning Lab on May 2, a brand-new two-story education building that gives the organization the space it’s needed to grow its programs and serve more of the community. At 2,500 square feet, the building is designed for real use, not just ribbon-cutting photos. It houses the education office and three separate classroom spaces, each with its own supply closet, large sink, and storage. There are three bathrooms, which anyone who’s ever managed a field trip knows is not a small thing.

The detail we keep coming back to, though, is the second-story outdoor deck. It overlooks the meadow, and it’s the kind of space that makes you want to slow down. Whether it’s students taking a break between lessons or families catching a sunset after a weekend program, that deck is going to get a lot of use.

Out front, a new entry plaza connects the Learning Lab to the park’s existing open-air pavilion and ties the whole campus together. It’s designed to work as a gathering space on its own: events, school groups arriving in the morning, people who just want a spot to sit before heading out on the trails.

The finishing touches are still going in right now. Furniture is on its way, a few final details are being sorted out, and the building will be formally unveiled on May 2 at the Nature Center’s annual Monarchs and Margaritas gala. If you want to be among the first to see it in its full glory, that’s your chance.

From a Discover Dunwoody perspective, this opening is a big deal. Dunwoody sits just north of Atlanta, and the Nature Center is one of those places that quietly does a lot for this city. It gives local families a reason to get outside, offers kids hands-on nature education they can’t get anywhere else, and makes the park itself a more interesting destination. For Atlanta-area visitors looking for things to do in Dunwoody, it’s already a go-to recommendation. We hear regularly from our hotel partners that guests ask for a good local park or a place to spend a relaxed afternoon, and the Nature Center is always near the top of the list.

More classroom space means more programs, and more programs mean more reasons for people to visit Dunwoody from Atlanta and beyond. That’s good for the Nature Center, good for our parks, and good for the businesses and hotels that depend on visitor traffic.

Speaking of Monarchs and Margaritas, if you haven’t been to this event before, put it on your calendar. It’s the Nature Center’s biggest fundraiser of the year and one of the more fun evenings Dunwoody has to offer. Think good food, great company, and a real celebration of everything the Nature Center means to this community. This year it takes on added meaning with the formal opening of the Wildcat Creek Learning Lab. Tickets are available at dunwoodynature.org.

If you’re looking for family-friendly activities near Atlanta, the Wildcat Creek Learning Lab is a great reason to make the drive to Dunwoody. Head to the Nature Center and check it out. And while you’re there, take a minute to stand on that deck.
